Bangabandhu Tunnel Paragraph for Class 5,6,7,8,9 HSC, SSC (Karnaphuli Tunnel): The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel under the Karnaphuli River has started a new era in the country’s road communication. Economists and investors hope that the tunnel will transform a vast land area from Mirsharai to Cox’s Bazar into an economic corridor. After the Padma Bridge, the 3.32 km tunnel is the second ‘dream project’ in the road transport sector to connect the two regions of the country. The tunnel has been built following the ‘One City to Town’ model like Shanghai in China.

The tunnel connects the port city of Chittagong at the northern end of the Karnaphuli with Anwara upazila on the south of the river. Economists and businessmen say the tunnel will work as a ‘game changer’ to turn Chattogram into an investment hub by connecting the two major economic corridors on both sides of the Dhaka-Chittagong and Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highways.

Economists hope that this tunnel will play an important role in improving the Asian Highway Network and strengthening connectivity between Bangladesh and neighboring countries in the future. 28th October 2023 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the tunnel. Today 29th October 203 it is open to everyone. The tunnel will contribute greatly to the economy, communication and tourism. This will be the roadmap of a developed Bangladesh in international trade. ‘

The tunnel will save time and money in transporting raw materials and manufactured goods used and produced in the factories of the country’s largest economic zone. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar in Mirsarai, Korean EPZ in Karnaphuli Upazila, China Industrial Zone in Anwara Upazila and Cox’s Bazar Coal Power Plant are in this zone.

Since tunnel construction began in 2015, many new factories have sprung up in the region. A decade ago, there were no industries on the two banks of the Karnaphuli. ‘ China and Bangladesh have jointly financed the project worth around Tk 11,000 crore. Beijing has lent about Tk 6,000 crore at two percent interest. China Communication Construction Company has built the tunnel at a depth of 18 to 31 meters under the Karnaphuli. The main tunnel is 3.32 kilometers long.

The length of its two tubes is 2.45 kilometers, including two lanes in each tube. There are 5.35 kilometers of connecting roads on the west and east ends of the tunnel and 727 meters flyover at the Anwara end.

The economic impact of the tunnel

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpanagar is being built on 33,805 acres of land at Mirsarai, about 10 kilometers from the Dhaka-Chittagong highway and 65 kilometers from the port city. It will be connected to the tunnel through Marine Drive along the coast. The Marine Drive will later be connected to the Matarbari deep sea port. Investors say this will save time and money as well as accelerate the industrialization of the area.
