BTRC’s new initiative to control social media. New initiatives have been taken in Bangladesh to regulate social media and online entertainment platforms. The country’s telecommunications regulator BTRC has drafted a policy in this regard. They also said that there are high court orders to frame new policies.
BTRC officials said the new initiative has been taken to bring discipline in the activities of social media, including Facebook and YouTube, and over the top or OTT platforms like Netflix. Many rules have been proposed for online platforms, including social media. At the same time, many rules have been put in place for the users of these platforms. These are –
- Any comments and news that are circulated or posted on social media, including Facebook and YouTube, against the independence and sovereignty of the country will be considered as an offense.

The founding President of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, cannot be defamed and commented upon or taunted.

Comments or topics that hurt or hurt the followers of any religion cannot be propagated.

Nothing can be done to disturb communal harmony.
Legal action has been proposed against anyone who posts or circulates these posts.
Its proposed name in the draft policy is ‘The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Regulation for Digital, Social Media and OTT Platforms’. Apart from this, the draft of the new policy says that no pornographic and immoral content can be promoted on the OTT platforms of entertainment, including Netflix, Hungama, and Amazon Prime.
If someone tries to open an account on Facebook or social media using someone else’s name or identity, legal action will be taken against him. If someone creates a situation by posting in the name of another, it is proposed to identify the real person and take action against him. No such post or comment can be made that will defame anyone in society. There is also a proposal to block posts, contents, or comments.
Public opinion has been sought on the draft policy on the BTRC’s website. You have to give your opinion by February 18th. Apart from this, the BTRC will take views this month in consultation with journalist representatives, OTT platform forms and various social media organizations, and various parties.
