Shahjalal University of Science and Technology does not start admission process

The pending admission process of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Shabiprabi) is not going to start immediately. This uncertainty has arisen as the VC issue has not been resolved and most of the members of the admission committee are infected with corona. The students are angry at such a stalemate in the admission process.

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology started the admission process for the first year of 2020-2021 from January 4. In a phased manner, those who passed out of the first merit list are admitted till January 11. But it was not completed in the stipulated time as there were not enough students for admission. The committee suspended the admission process indefinitely on January 22 due to the latest anti-VC agitation.

At the end of the first merit list, it was found that only 25.78 percent of the students were admitted to the university. 74.22 percent of the seats are vacant. Later, the admission process of the second merit list started on January 17. According to the latest data, 1,178 seats are vacant in the university. According to sources, on January 13, the movement demanding the resignation of the provost body of Sirajunnesa Hall became an anti-VC movement.

To quell the agitation, the administration announced an indefinite closure of the university. The students rejected such a decision of the administration and staged a sit-in in front of the VC’s residence. However, the admission process was still going on. The protesters also did not obstruct the admission process. Later on January 22, the admission committee suspended the admission process indefinitely.

Sources said the situation in the university is somewhat normal, but the admission process is not starting right now. The admission committee is also not able to take any decision as the VC issue is not resolved. At the same time, many members of the committee are infected with corona. The convener of the committee, Prof. Dr. Mushtaq, is also physically ill. Because of this, the committee cannot sit in any meeting. As a result, the admission process is not starting in the university. The students are unsure of it.

Many students expressed their anger. Students said that classes have also started after the admissions in other universities are over. And we haven’t been admitted yet. There has also been a stalemate due to the movement. No one at the university is clear when the stalemate will end.
